Hi Aaron,
I for one am glad that you turn your admirable skills to the horrible travesty that is the Big Brother show. I did not see your last site, but with the horrendous exploitation of the disadvantaged that we see, year after year, on that show, I think a voice such as yours making sense of it and putting things into perspective is a breath of frssh air, and I hope a positive role model for the young people who sadly get caughgt up in this rubbish. My daughter has suffered from OCD for the past year, and it has been a slow uphill battle that she is now finally conquering. Yes, she exhibits some of the traits associated with the illness, but as you have quite rightly said, to put the experience of it down to the supposedly "quirky" activities of OCD, and to do so for public entertainment, literaly upsets me as much as it no doubt does for many other sufferers and their families. I really do hope the show uses this to create something positive, but let's be realistic... IT'S BIG BROTHER! Regardless, they are currently using it quite clearly to secure opening night ratings and interest, there's no other way of seeing it at this stage. Like you, I've never really cared too much about the level of sexual content, and simply find it crass and don't understand why anyone would find it amusing or intriguing in any way. But I do believe that the sooner this show meets its maker, the better. Until such a time, I wish you all the very best in bringing some intelligence to what is otherwise the most degrading, mindless show on television.

All the best to you,
Beth

Thanks Beth,
Yes, I think you're quite right in pointing out that regardless of how the show eventually plays it out, for now, this is a straight-out ratings stunt for the opening night. I don't think anyone sees it in any other light. I do suspect that the show may try to inject some form of discussion into this year's series, so we'll wait with our fingers crossed. But what's such a shame about this, is that this current move still undermines whatever good will come, because the initial introduction of their so-called "social issues" has ended up coming across as another crass ratings pull. I'll be honest - I was trying to be optimistic, because I do know that the show has to turn away from the sexual angle, this year (it has to, because of the new restrictions in place), but this is a transparent manouvre that I find disheartening. Until the show gives me a reason to change my mind, I go into this series in not too different a mindet from the last. But regardless of what unfolds, and in what capacity my inclusion in the discussions will be (you'll see me popping up in more places than just the site), I assure you I will keep them going, and will bring something positive into the proceedings. The show can be used for some good  - that's why I started the site, last year. The show now has to put its money where its mouth is, and if it needs to still satisfy the lower end of the scale (and realistically, it does  - I just wish they would do that without using the concept of a psychological disorder), it should at least cater to a market who are slightly higher end, or they'll lose more of their potential audience. And I still say that there's a very strong possibility there actually isn't any OCD in the house, as such, and that this has been a cleverly contrived stunt born out of carefully placed ambiguous bombs. As I said, time will tell.

Thanks, and make sure you pop in for the ride...
Aaron
