Hi,

I liked your article on Newcastle. Although I don't live in, or have ever been, to the place, I think it touched on a range of social issues that are becoming more important as class divide increases in this society. We really do need to get real about this issue, but there's a kind of tabooism around it. You've never struck me as the kind of person who shies away from taboos, so it's great that you explore it in such a gutsy and profound way. I guess you could say I'm essentially middle class, and associate mostly with middle class, also. I think this modern era of consumerism has really had an effect on this culture, and I have noticed a real shift amongst the people I know to exhibit more materialistic and dare I say, selfish,  ideals in terms of their lifestyles. They do so without any social concerns, and because they see thmselves as "deserving it", I confess I have often come across an attitude that the poorer alternatively "deserve" their conditions - which are becoming worse by the second, in this country. Yet we don't talk about it! So I just wanted to say good on you, I've been coming here for ages and really admire your courage and clarity. I personally think you should forget media and move into politics! If we had more people as driven by their social thinking as you, we'd be better off. Keep up the fantastic work.

Thanks John,

I've had a couple of busy days, lately, so I'm only just getting to some of the letters that have been in my inbox. But one in particular actually exhibits what you were speaking of - it's just that I want to check if they mind if it's published (it's quite strong, and I know some people don't correctly equate the contact form with this Your Say section). Hopefuly, I will hear back, and I can post it. Because you're quite right, that attitude is naturally out there.

And thankyou for your kind words. I won't be entering politics anytime soon, no! But thanks, the sentiment is still appreciated.
