Hi Aaron,
Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your article about the recent problems in Newcastle. I did see something about this on the news (I'm in Sydney) but didn't quite know the whole story. But even so, I think the article used this story well as a metaphor for wider issues (but I probably don't have to tell you that!). As always, it was ultimately challenging and left me with a kind of contradiction between something quite compassionate and understanding, and yet so bleak in other ways, something that to me really definies you're style when you're in top form. It really captures something quite profound about the human condition, yet doesn't spoon-feed. I love how you use little moments in your experience to bring home what you're trying to say, and I must say that I am in that group of your audience who often write in and encourage you to publish more of this style. As someone else once put it to you, I too do think you often underestimate the appeal of your own story, I think when you write from the personal it is by far the most fascinating. I'm a great admirer of your work, and hope you continue giving us these wonderful pieces.
Sincere thanks,
Mary

Hi Mary,

Well thankyou, that's exceptionally kind of you! I love these longer, more personal pieces, too, but the basic fact of the matter is that I can't churn these out on such a regular basis, and I do think the various kinds of writing here can co-exist, peacefully, like man and fish (George Bush joke there, for anyone who doesn't know the reference). Think of it as the difference between running into me on the bus and having a lighter chit-chat about some TV show we saw the night before, and sitting up all night with me over a bottle of red, discussing issues and experiences at greater length. Not everyone prefers the second of these scenarios! But I personally do, so I must say, I always like it when others agree, it's very welcome.

Thanks sincerely, also,
Aaron
