"That often brutal conservatism has at last been pushed back at the federal level. This is therefore a historic moment in American domestic politics."
The Guardian

Some good news now starting to trickle in from the good ol' U S of A - George Wanker Bush is finally suffering, as election results start to roll in, and key Republican seats start falling victim to a country now unable to ignore the reality of the Iraq disaster (with almost 3000 dead American troops and 600,000 dead Iraqi civilians), dissatisfied by Bush's denial of global warming (as the issue continues to take hold in the public consciousness), and increasingly confused by anti-gay stances from a party plagued by internal gay sex scandals. States including Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio and Rode Island are among the first House seat swaps to take place, and early poll projections suggest a Democrat victory is all but inevitable. It's not the happy ending we'd all like, but realistically, it's a much needed change in direction, and the conservative movement finally has a spanner thrown in the wheel. It's a great day.

The election has already been plagued by voting machine malfunctions, and there is now an immediate inquest called by Democrats into "voter intimidations" said to have taken place in Virginia (the FBI now investigating these claims against the accused Republican party foul play). But the better news is that it is now expected to reveal a record number of votes (in the non-compulsory American voting system), as the USA finally finds motivation to punish their cowboy. Amazingly enough, in the past, these elections have only ever hit a high of around 40% - something many of us here in nations of compulsory voting often forget when considering and comparing the American political landscape to our own.

In the final hours leading up to the vote, Bush held to the predictable spin of scare-mongering, and reminded voters that only the Great George can protect the country against terrorism and "win the war" (remember when he sailed in on the boat and told us he'd already won?). The sentencing of Hussein was another predictable theme of final speeches, but after initial news reporting from Fox (showing thousands of happy Iraqis), violence in the region soon escalated, and (what a pleasant surprise, this was) the situation became complicated by calls from other nations involved in the Coalition Of The Willing against the death penalty. Seems the rush to sentence Hussein (for crimes against humanty carried out with weapons provided by the US, let us not forget) didn't quite go to plan.

If the rest of the evening plays out as expected, this will be the first time in 12 years that the Democrats have gained control of both houses of the US congress, and will make Bush's remaining two years of term decidedly more difficult. No sympathy, here.
