Re:Greer's "On Rage" - 2008/08/21 02:02
So I read the essay a couple of times, and maybe given the media hype (it was about something...wasn't it?), I have missed a point somewhere. Greer seems to be linking alcoholism/substance abuse to domestic violence cycles...which came about because British settlers fathered children with Aboriginal women. And these children have been borne into a world where they lack distinct cultural identity. And the inability to reclaim this identity leads to social disfuction and thus rage?

I'm not sure that I am even understanding what is meant by 'rage' in the context of the essay. Help?

Well, there is certainly a dissonance between some of the reactions and reporting and the actual essay! And this says more about the people reacting, most times, than it does the material they're reacting to.

The point in contention is that she does use the patriarchal mindset as the context within which this cycle of abuse is "generated", and it's this that has cut so close to the bone and revved up everyone. As we all know, I'm more than down for looking at social issues through the patriarchal mindset! So I've not the complaints about that which others have.

There is, of course, a subjectivity in there - one could say glaring and transparent, at times - but that, as anyone who knows my work well enough will know - is, to me, a part of any analysis and doesn't invalidate it, as such.

I'm glad that this thread has reminded me that people are discussing something they haven't read. It's why I wanted to wait til I had a copy, but I probably would have written my article, without doing anything about that problem, so I'll make sure I outline, in very simple terms, the gist of the argument, so that if you haven't read it, you hopefully have a better understanding of what she's saying.

Disclaimer: I havent read "On Rage". I saw Germaine Greer doing the PR/discussing her point on Lateline and Q&A.

I think its fascinating what all this brings out. Greer is well known for razzing people up. Intellectuals (whatever that means) get particularly razzed, no doubt through some perception of a competitive challenge. In this case she's managed to also annoy many Aboriginal leaders. I think this is good. The fact that we're finally getting down to tin tacks is so refreshing. As she pointed out on Lateline, in the context of colonial castration (my phrase) how the hell can we feel entitled to say to Aborginal men "just get over it".

This is not to undermine at all the problems everyone else (including me) has with the horrific damage those men are inflicting on their families. But its refreshing to have a foreigner (of sorts) jet in and be outrageously honest about the underlying problems, because without addressing them, theres fuck all hope.

I feel able to say this because my good friend Rosie thinks this too, and she's on the ball...
