Re:the Gruen Transfer - 2008/06/08 18:25 Yeah, I saw the first episode. Actually, as an "insider" is the only way I could watch that show, and it made me feel uncomfortable, I didn't really like it. But I can't approach it as an everyday person, in any way. I actually know a couple of the panelists (professionally). I was hoping for something different, because they were kind of pitching it as a show that explores and exposes advertising. It does only in a very vague way. I don't know, do you think it does? To me, it was kinda celebrating it, through. So, I kept sitting there, thinking, "Ugh, these people are idiots, don't put them on a comedic pedestal". But perhaps that's because I view it in such a larger context, and I have my own ideas on those people and where their stuff comes from. BUT if it does help people understand advertising a bit more, it's better than nothing. And it shows that there's a real demographic out there, now, who approach advertising with a much more savvy mindset. But it's still all very soft, it's hardly an "expose" of it, and I thought it was going to be laughing AT advertising, and it seemed to be laughing WITH it, a little too much for me. And I just dont find them very funny.
But imagine watching a show based on the work you do for a living. I spend so much of my time in that world, the last thing I want to do, really, is watch a show about it!! I felt like watching it impeached on my free time, because here I was back in the advertising mindset, and I just wanted to get away from it!

Re:the Gruen Transfer - 2008/07/23 21:05 Aaron, i can tell you that a good mate of mine who is in advertising, well graphic design actually, he also found it difficult to watch being an insider.
This would happen i guess for any media representation of a thing you do as work. For example my wife demanded i watch Death At A Funeral particularly because of a certain hilarious scene in which one character has someones shit on his face. She was in hysterics but because i worked in disabilities for 10 years it was common stuff for me. I have changed adult diapers and dealt with some nasty smearing situations. So it just doesnt have the shock value for me.
Re:the Gruen Transfer - 2008/07/24 16:09 I have been watching this because it just always seems to come on the tele! I agree Aaron that in the beginning it was very weak, but it's getting a bit better and at least they are bringing an ethical element into it. Maybe you should watch it again, I do think it would be worth you writing about. As you said, it's better than what's out there usually.

Re:the Gruen Transfer - 2008/07/26 02:18 I totally love the "Sell the Unsellable" segment !
Had me hooked from the fake Whale-meat ads, and now I look forward to that segment every week !"To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by healthy child, a garden patch ... to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded !" - EMERSON.

Re:the Gruen Transfer - 2008/07/26 16:05 OK, I obviously need to watch this again - I'm looking for material to write about for here, so maybe I've found a worthy review.
