My Kid's A Star - 2008/04/10 16:55
I missed it! Sorry, I've been so busy this week, as you may be able to tell. Did anyone watch it?

I'm going to make sure I catch it, next week. But if anyone can privvy me to what I'm in for, that'd be great. Does it take a slant that allows us to see how exploitative and messed up the phenomenon can be? Or does it just glorify it?

Aaron, read my post in "Nine's Super Tuesdays", I put a couple of links there to news articles about that show. I didn't end up watching it myself though so have no idea what it was really like.

I watched the repeat on Saturday afternoon and found the format annoying and charmless. Plenty of reality show “coming up” flash forwards showing tears or anger with very little content, and then when they finally show the scene you can’t work out what the big deal is etc al.

I found it quite interesting that your Age of Reason article was perfectly illustrated with the 15 yr old dancer who had taken on board the message bombarding her age group (and younger). Choosing to perform in a sort of sporty gold one piece number, figure hugging with hot pants shorts she smiled at the camera with a “hello sailor” wink (Christina Aguilera style).

The female judge started with “who chose your outfit?” to which the mother indicated her daughter did. Of course she did growing up on a diet of Video Hits and MTV. The female judge then turns to the male judges (the magic 2/1 ratio for judges continues to apply) and asks them if they found it sexy, and does it make them uncomfortable that she’s 15. I’m sure that their main discomfort comes from having the 15 yr olds mother sitting next to them rather than her age.

I also considered the fact that she was a “grown up” looking 15 yr old (read had breasts). Would the judges have been more comfortable if she wore that outfit and been a willowy teen (like the polish model). Women who are more than skin draped over bone (either with the media approved deposits of fat or large all over) are often accused of playing on their sex appeal. Wearing the same tops or dresses is considered indecent when the material is stretched rather than hanging like a clothes hanger. This is the fashion industry main excuse for not having "plus" size models, the clothes don't hang as well.

Gosh that was an essay!

I saw a very brief clip of the dancer online and I gotta say that her outfit wasn't that bad. *cough*but her dancing was*cough* I've seen a LOT worse at eisteddfods and on kids a LOT younger. We're careful at our dance studio to outfit kids and do choreography appropriate to their age groups but a lot of others aren't! The wink she gave the judges wasn't in the clip and neither was her asking them if they thought it was sexy - so I can't comment on that part.
