Let's do the Time Warp again? - 2008/02/11 13:41
Okay, so let me get this straight...

A year ago, your site (yet again) is hacked by people who clearly have more time on their hands than is good for them, and they do such a good job of it, you can never get everything you lose in this hacking back, and for the last twelve months there's been no game arcade and the visitor counter doesn't work, etc, etc. Then, two days ago, through a technical problem, you end up with a back up that means everything is how it was just before the hacking, and you finally have everything back? I think it's beautiful karma, if you ask me, what decision needs to be made?? Keep it!

Well, that's what I'm thinking. I am now smart enough to keep copies of all the articles (we may remember what happened, last time, when I had no copies of the articles we lost... learnt my lesson, there). So, it's the obvious choice, because it's really annoyed me, not having the functions working, and Dust spent so long creating the gaming arcade for us! What happened, after we were hacked, is that we did a restoration ourselves, importing missing components that the hackers had deleted, but we couldn't get it all going. But two days ago, there's a problem with our domain hosts, and they accidentally revert to an old copy of the site they have, and, yes, here's everything we lost! It's going to take a few hours, of course, while I put all the recent articles back in.

HOWEVER, it means that all the forum board discussions since then will be lost - I don't have back ups of those. And the letters from Your Say. There's still a chance we can have the site restored to how it was two days ago. But then, of course, we lose those other components again.

Ok, I think we're going to run with that, and just rebuild it from here.

I've got the mails for "your say", of course, so I'm going to start putting up some more recent ones (I'm not going through all 300 or so, no). But the forum boards in between April 2007 and now are gone. Sorry, I've got a back up, but I can't log in as all of you and recreate them, if you know what I mean. But some conversations are meant to be transient, so let's accept it. I think it's worth the while, in the bigger picture. I can now also embed youtube files into articles, and the spell-checker programme I installed into the entry system is back (and that makes me smile, I must say). So, by all means, chat away, and let's get rid of these outdated forum conversations that are now the most recent on the site!

This will take a couple of days for me to put everything back into the site, so bear with me as we have a strange time-lapse effect, over the next 24 hours or so.

Thanks,
Aaron

I never know what to expect when I drop in here. You didn't get hacked again did you? What a strange thing to end up with all the old posts back! They were much more heated if I remember correctly!

Been busy lately, but dropped in to see if you were going to say anything about the coming apology?

Will Aaron Darc say sorry?

Yes, the drama returns. And, yes, we were hacked. I really wanted to believe it was a server/hosting issue, and was happy to ignore it, after we decided to run with the backup, but then it happened again, and yes, it turns out that's what it was. But Bubbles is right, it turns out that it has a strange cyclic kind of luck to it, because it led to fixing all the problems from the last hack (which, from the style of hack, appears to be the same person). So what goes around comes around, and in this case has been a beneficial boomerang. I imagine most people hacking sites don't imagine it will actually help the site! So fuck you, whoever you are.

And it has been a good slap, because it means we are now going to save back ups once a week, so even though we've also upgraded the security (which all becomes outdated, sooner or later, of course, and I think this was this week's problem), so long as we make those backups (which I did once do, but had stopped in the busy year I've had), we can just put it straight back up. So finally, I think our pirated past comes to an end.

And yes, I do want to say something about tomorrow's apology. And can I begin by asking everyone to watch Today Tonight (this evening's edition) who have, I believe, finally stepped over the line (which is hard to believe is possible, but watch what they're running with, on the eve of the apology, and you'll know what I mean). And I urge everyone to complain. The problem with the problem of Today Tonight is that we accept it (it's almost become a running joke, after all), and nobody actually complains.

Missed Today Tonight, but I did catch Tony Abbot on Lateline. No comment, I think we all know he's nuts!

I started a sorry thread Aaron, hope that's okay.
