Re:Warnie - 2006/12/21 23:42
Great post Damo. It's good to hear the opinion of a cricket fan and hear another male perspective (apart from aaron's) on Shane Warne.

That's a really interesting point about Simone Warne and the coverage in the 'ambulance chasing' sections of the women's media. Seems they both have a public role to play--he's 'jack the lad' and she's the long-suffering-but-loyal (up to a point) domestic goddess.

In regards to getting enough TV time, in our household it's like this: I support the watching of sport (incomprehensible to me) and my partner puts up uncomplainingly with my reality TV obsession, my preoccupation with daggy vintage TV shows and my need to analyse TV advertising aloud ... hey, it works for us

Cheers Redeye,

I had a 2nd think about it - I'm not so sure we have seen the last of the 'headlines' from Fatboy.

He has committed to playing out 2 years of cricket in England. But has retired from all Australian cricket playing committments. (Must be a huge 'nest-egg' type contract!). There is still potential for more nonsense on the Warnie front.

Aaron's article may have to wait.

Oh, and Aaron - there is a farewell to Warnie (cough) tribute either NY-day or the day after on Foxtel. Not sure of details - I rolled my eyes and didn't think to remember for you, but it came to mind during this post.

Argh I hate Shane Warne with a passion lol. When I was at school (from about yr 8 or so, although I liked it before then), a couple of my friends (female, like me) were right into cricket, we loved it - one dayers, test matches, we'd watch them. We collected anything that had to do with Cricket, cards, stickers, cricket magazines, shirts, hats, articles in the newspapers (I don't know how much money I wasted in the 10c per copy photocopier at the school library but I was always in there using it not only to copy articles but to enlarge pictures I'd found as well - I think I spent at least $4 a day nearly every day lol). We'd even go via a bus company tour to one of the one day game finals held at the MCG each year (long but fun trip - leave at 6am, get to Melbourne at lunch time, games were always day/nighters, and leave after the game at around 10:30 and get home again at about 4 or 5am - my best friend from school and I are planning to take our sons one day as soon as they are old enough).

Anyway, we had our favourites, not only because of how they played, but of course because of the way they looked. At one stage, my favourite Victorian player (who hadn't made the Australian team at that time) was Warnie. Once he made the Aussie team, I never liked him after that - he was too arrogant (and I thought he was ugly by then too lol). I hate the way the media has built him up to practially God status, and he has taken advantage of it. Yeah ok, he's the best spin bowler in the world, we get it, you don't have to remind us every 5 minutes! As for his wife, I read a headline of a magazine (probably Woman's Day or something like that) last week that she had reunited with him. I think that's silly of her, ok so she may be doing it for the kids, but I think that is not a good reason, they stand to get hurt (yet again, and it will happen!) by him as much as she does, so to put them through that is wrong I think.

Anyway, I'm just rambling (your influence is great, Aaron lol) so I'll stop now!

I've grown up loving cricket, and obviously loving the work warnie does on the field. It is interesting to see how many other males of my age (15, 16) embody the same type of morals and care for the consequences of their actions as Warnie. It seems so many of them glorify getting as many girls as they can, not caring of the impact it may have. It, in itself, has become a sport. I think Warne is definately the best leggie ever, if not the best cricketer. I also think that he has been one of the factors that glorified an 'Aussie larikin', and the impact is starting to show on many kids who've grown up being told that no matter what Warnie does, he is a hero.
