Site instability - 2007/01/16 14:17
Hi,

Just wanted to confirm for everyone that if you've been having some problems with the site over the past few days, it's not you! Sadly, it's us. We had another rush of people the other day, which as we've discussed before for those who know, poor little PPBP doesn't handle very well. I've tried to teach it to learn to love being popular, but once it has 70 people looking at it at once, it freaks out!

We've been in contact with both our server and Joomla over this, because I think it's a problem with their service, and we're now working with them to create something a little more stable. If it isn't resolved, we'll be moving the whole site over to somewhere else (but we'll try this first). But over the next few days, this may continue. It means that every now and then, pages may load a little slower, and that the site may go down briefly. It's not happening for great lengths of time, but it's happening fairly regularly. The other day, the site was down for an hour (meaning our "back in 5 mins was... well... a lie) but usually it's dropping out only for a minute and then comes back on, and this is happening mostly during the night-shift (our server is in Texas, so luckily, they're doing things while it's night over here). The problem with registering as a user looks like it's now been fixed (but again, if anyone tries to register and it doesn't work, just email me your details through the contact form, and I can do it this way).

Sorry for all the hiccups, but after this, we will have a site that is smoother and can handle it when we get a mention on radio, or wherever it is, and people flock to it at once.

Thanks,
Aaron

PS: If we cannot resolve this, and we fork out some cash to go with a better server (keep in mind that this is a non-profit, non-commercial site), it means we may have to shut the site for a day or so. But if this happens, I'll let you know in advance. But if you miss my message and you come to this address to find not even a "we'll be back in 5 mins" splash page, it hasn't gone forever, we're just crossing servers.

Hi again,

We have now worked out the nature of this problem, and as a result, we will be swapping servers, tomorrow. This may mean that the site is down for a couple of hours, but after this, it should be smooth sailing, once again.

Thanks for your patience on this, and my apologies for the erratic server response times in the past week, and for the lag in the chatroom. It's almost over!

Cheers,
Aaron

It is just me, or have about 2 days worth of posts just dissapeared?

Perhaps they were eaten by the new server?

Hi,

Sory, yeah, you're right. It's reverted to a couple of days ago! Sorry about this, I've now emailed then, I'm not going to hold my breath to get them back. It's annoying, I've lost letters as well. Thank God I didn't post my new article.

We'll cross our fingers. But I can't promise anything. At least it's quick, now, and the lagging is over.

ah, don't u just love computing technology these days Aaron?

as some car company (Ford i think) said in a response to a Bill Gates comment - (somthing along the lines of) "well, how often do u see cars crash on their own like Windows does? I would be a very worried man if our products had as many faults as theirs"

they (the computing technology companies) are always in a mad rush to be the first to get out the latest technologies in their products but never worry that much about making sure it works properly all the time...
