Just a note to say that in my recent explorations of online rage (which I will still be publishing), I inevitably came across Germaine Greer's latest controversy, regarding her ideas on the role and origins of rage in the Aboriginal male community. I've now got this book (short essay, really) and will be writing a piece about this, once I've finished it. As usual, I'm more interested in the reaction to the book (although, we will discuss its ideas, too) and it's a fascinating thing! So we'll chat about it soon. Perhaps some of you have come across this, and have some ideas, already...

I guess i would like to know if she has spent time with a fair number of various communities. I would like to know that she has spoken to multiple generations and that her essay is based on real studies. Otherwise it is merely just an opinion, an ill informed one. That hasn't stopped anyone from having a strong one now has it.

I would argue that rage is unlikely to be a strong factor in the Aboriginal gene pool. Given the thousands of years this community has maintained a status quo of living before whites arrived i doubt rage would have been a very useful tool. I see no way that anyone could attribute this therefore to a race that is spread across a continent as large as ours. Come scream obscene things at me http://thesubjectsofinterest.blogspot.com/

But this is not what her essay is about - she's not attributing rage to a race, as such. She's looking at the problems of "rage" within the aboriginal community, in the problems there are with violence against women and self-destructive behaviours, etc, and putting forward reasons based on psychodynamic/cultural origins. I'm going to wait til I've finished, but alot of it is quite logical. I'll agree with some elements and not others, I'd imagine.

Great Aaron looking forward to your reflections...

I don't know about Rage as such - I wonder about Self Hate and where that fits in with Rage. Self Hate and colonization make sense to me and I can understand how self hate relates to violence and social decimation. I haven't read the essay yet so I am not sure if or whether she connects the two. Rage feels to me like it is linked to some feeling of power - I am open to being challenged on this - but if Rage is linked to power then Rage and the Indigenous community see a bit of a misnomer. On the other hand, there are Indigenous activists who have advocated Rage. Hmmm...lots to think about.
