Ian Thorpe is a young man who achieved excellence in his profession and I wish him all the best in his retirement.

Good for him making enough money to be able to retire.

But I am sick of the Australian obsession with sports. When are we going to revere our scientists more? Didn't we recently have a man discover a vaccination for cervical cancer? Another Australian discovered the causes of ulcers.

These men will save many lives and alleviate a lot of suffering. Where is there hero worship?

I have more time for our engineers, teachers, mathematicians and scientists than our sports stars. The lives they help and influence mean more to me than a sports star and their feel good factor.

Is there anyone else out there sick of the idol worship of our sports people?

I too dont share this nations obsession with sports stars, The Australian of the year list reflects this obsession : Steve Waugh, Pat Rafter, Mark Taylor, Cathy Freeman, Allan Border etc. Let the Ashes frenzy begin and lets smash them poms !!!! Speaking of which as an Australian from English decent, why is the term pom so readily accepted in this country ?? It bugs me to hear even news readers refer to the English as poms, not very pc of them ! Big Love

sweetchilli,

I suspect ignorance and an inferiority complex. By referring to our English cousins with such a derogatory term makes them feel better about themself.

I have an ameteur theory that confident/intelligent peole do not need to put down others and other countries. They treat each person on their merits and withour preconceptions.

Little do they realise, but the majority of the rest of the world cares nothing about cricket.

I used to love cricket and the Australian team under Allan Border. But after Steve Waugh took over, I lost interest. I am sure there are some wonderful players in the current team, but I wouldn't know.
