I have not seen it but I do believe, and always will believe Heath Leger was robbed the year of Broke Back. I believe it was the only truly romantic film I have ever seen.
How on earth a forgettable film like Crash got best picture and an odd actor playing a carricature, and a really awful one of the great Truman Capote got best actor is a mystery,
I guess it had much to do with the fact that America likes its gays to queeny and bitchy.

Easy there big boy. I wouldnt go knocking on Philip Seymour Hoffman. He is a wonderful actor (although i was nonplussed with that particular film). If you have seen Boogie Nights and Magnolia surely you saw his brilliance in those.

And how have you only seen one truly romantic film? Surely sexual preference is not a pre-requisite to a film being romantic to you. Have you not seen any Hal Hartley films? Trust is my top romantic film.
Aside from that I just wish award shows were scrapped completely.

Yeah, awards shows are all political and about everything other than a fair evaluation of artistic merit. I ignore them all. The only interesting thing, considering that about them, is how they often tie in to cultural aspects of the time, considering that these largely dictate what wins what. But, even so, that's then mixed with a lot of stuff that's basically corporate PR, and it just invalidates the whole thing for me. I knew someone involved in a big awards show here in Oz (which will remain nameless) and they knew who had won, but when one of the stars set to win pulled out coming, they offered the award to basically any OS star who would show. So, surprise surprise, one takes the bait (one with failing US sales) and gets all the awards. Ridiculous. So take no notice of awards shows, in so many ways they are the original commercial PR propaganda.

In that case Aaron, shouldn't we be expecting to see Heath get the posthumous Oscar? Dark Knight is certainly no failing film, but surely it would be a huge boost to the awards ceremony viewing audience?

I got dragged along to see the film with my boyfriend...on the opening night..at the Hoyts La Premiere cinema with cushy seats, deliciously alcoholic drinks and semi-real food. Then I tracked down a 13" fully poseable Ledger-Joker figurine with 'real' clothes and dozens of accessories for him for our anniversary. I had to sweet talk the owner of a comic store into ordering in one for me, because EVERYWHERE was sold out a week after stock was released. There is Ledger fever in Perth. You can't even get the kiddie Joker merchandise in K-Mart.

I can't say that a lot of the film stuck in my brain, but I do have a soft spot for Heath. It's a nice idea, travelling so far from little Perth, and becoming so successful. But I suppose we all aspire to a different ending.

Absolutely. I will be stunned if it doesn't happen that way. The Oscars have been hit hard by a lot of bad PR, in recent years, and its viewing numbers were way down, last year. I think it's the perfect publicity move, and will unite many demos and prove to the mainstream world that the Oscars is still relevant and in touch with more mainstream attitudes, which it was always considered to be, after all, it was never an arty ceremony (The Globes always had more cred, in that way).

I love an awards show! The tackier the better. Surely, it's all about tacky outfits and attention-seeking fame whores. Who ever said an award show honoured 'talent'? Gods forbid!

Having said that, I have seen The Dark Knight. It was an okay film, made memorable by Heath Ledger's fine performance. But what happened to Christian Bale? He is usually a wonderful actor, but in this he was completely (and breathily) forgettable!
