Make Me A Supermodel - 2008/09/18 13:23
New thread to discuss the show.

I caught some of a 'behind the scenes' ep. repeat on daytime television where the cotestants were told to strip off and burn their clothes in a little bonfire...To symbolise release from the material world? When they are all competing for entrance into a profession driven by materialism?

My body image radar (it's a girl thing!) did a little backflip in the elimination round when Jennifer Hawkins complemented one of the female contestants (Sara?) on progressing with her diet and looking 'great' after having lost weight. Maybe this is the 'reality' element of the show coming through. Nasty industry standards and all that.

I would be interested to know if anyone has tallied up the number of plugs given for marie claire magazine in a Supermodel episode - talk about shameless cross-promotion. I guess Vogue Australia and Harper's Bazaar were otherwise occupied, because I honestly don't see their level of (supermodel)'exclusivity' in marie claire. Not that Jackie Franks' existing contract with Channel 7 for Sunrise would have anything to do with the magazine's inclusion.

Make Me A Supermodel left me questioning the relevance of its presumptuous title, because at the end of the day I wouldn't really call Jennifer Hawkins a 'supermodel' (as the show does, repeatedly), and I don't think the contestants will find that the label adheres either. Even Tyra Banks who has a claim to supermodel status, does not claim her show Next Top Model will produce a supermodel winner.

There has been some controvercy over one of the hopefuls (I believe the one who was told to tone up) choosing to not model topless with body paint. She is 17 for goodness sakes, surely this is not a request that should even be posed to someone under 18.

Sure, there is inconsistency between saying it’s fine for a 17 to model swimwear or underwear which can easliy be more sexual than being topless.

But you need to draw the line somewhere, and i am comfortable drawing it where exposed nipples are concerned.

I am so going to have to blog this show, aren't I?!?!?

Okay, I'll watch it, tonight, and start blogging.

I saw that part where she refused to do it, good on her. And they used that awful reality TV excuse of "This is what the real industry is like"... but it isn't!! Real models don't have to go down the street and be painted trees in front of bogans holding TV Week posters, and all whilst being judged on national TV. They don't have to strip down and burn their clothes to break through the existential barrier stopping them from embracing the model lifestyle. I mean, really!

But it's still mesmorisingly bad TV, I can't help it.

Does anyone have a copy of the burning scene? I'm dying for a copy, but because it was only on the extras show (it wasn't on the primetime one, right?) I can't get hold of it - I really want to make a youtube clip and embed it so everyone can watch it.

Looks like the burning was on primetime during episode 4, but only for about 2 minutes.

You can stream it from the official site here:
http://au.video.yahoo.com/network/100854137 at about -16:40 to -14:35 mins.

There is some copy protection on the footage though, so regular .flv URL-grabbing software (or just poking through the cache) won't work.
