Salam Cafe - 2008/05/08 01:23
So Lame cafe blows.........
See my clever a play on words and reinforcing the sterotype that all Muslims are terrorists.
Salam Cafe, a new comedy show on SBS Wednesdays 10pm. Billed as, "A new comedy-panel show looking at the funny side of life as an Australia Muslim".
I was thinking this my be as entertaining as "The Panel" That show with Glenn Robins, et al that used to be on channel 10 for a while.
I was hoping for a bit of a laugh and that I could create one of those play on words head lines to head up my review. You know the ones that tabloid newspapers rely on so often. Such as, "Slamin Cafe, 5/5 for it's innovative comedy".
Unfortunately, it's one and only thread or should that be threat of comedy was about Islam being closely associated with terrorism. The show couldn't drag itself away from that subject. I expect some Social Worker was employed as a consultant for the show who said, If you make fun of the association between Islam and terrorism enough. People won't feel so threatened by you.
In fact, it had the opposite effect. It made me think of all the crazy things Islamists have done in violence and the fact these "comics" can't tell a joke. It could lead a bloke to think, ALL Muslims really are uptight.
Dave Hughes, a real comic came on but even he struggled and he knew it. The discomfort was clear in his eyes. The only time he got off the ground was telling a joke about how Muslims don't gamble. He said they should get down to the club and play the pokies or they could stay at home and stick pop corn up their cats bum. You had to be there, it was funny.
The show did have one redeeming thing. The white chick with the hijab and the tongue piercing. It seems Muslim women give head jobs, apparently.
Salam Cafe sucks and blows all at the same time.
PS: Australia Muslim, what is that BS. That's a whole lot of the problem right there. They're not seeing themselves as straight up Australians. They're Australians with an asterix.
On the other hand, we shouldn't concern ourselves with regional differences, tagging ourselves as Australian, Vietnamese, Greek etc. 'Cause at the end of the day, those names are artifical political borders. We should just see ourselves as humans and just get on with life.
