I do? - 2008/11/07 10:37
I have a couple of questions on Prop 8/marriage etc.

Do you support marriage for heterosexual couples?
Do you support marriage for same sex couples?

Do you believe that supporting same sex marriage is instrumental in supporting GLBT rights?

Do you think marriage is linked to religion?
Do you think marriage should be linked to religion?

Do you think marriage is linked to governmental recognition?
Do you think marriage should be linked to government recognition?

Do you support marriage for heterosexual couples? yes

Do you support marriage for same sex couples? yes

Do you believe that supporting same sex marriage is instrumental in supporting GLBT rights?

could you word it differently?

i don't think its about that. i have always supported GLBT rights, i just think that they should be on par with everyone else. that everyone should be treated equal. that there should be no difference between a same sex couple and a hetro couple as far as the law goes, health benifit companies, etc. its like when women couldn't vote? why? when aboriginals couldnt vote? because we were and aboriginals were classed as second class citizens. no one should feel like they are second class, or to be made feel like they need to sit at the back of the bus.
it must be very depressing for the GLBT community, when one is sick, when one needs to do something legal as a a couple. i would find the whole thing frustrating. anyway that is someone from the GLBT community to talk about. instead of this hetro chick hehehe.
you must get sick of me sometimes people.

Do you think marriage is linked to religion? it can be, i prefer it not to be.

Do you think marriage should be linked to religion? its up to the individual couple, some are very religious and need that to be part of their marriage. they need to do it in front of god. me i like to do it in front of a tree, done that twice hehehehe.

Do you think marriage is linked to governmental recognition?it most definitly is, i know this cause i know been married twice i have all the paper work from two marriages and one divorce

Do you think marriage should be linked to government recognition?yes it should, rather than religion, not everyone is religous. but you need to have it legal so that people like health funds can recognise you as a couple, wills can be done,
etc etc etc.

Well i hope i have discussed this well enough for you Katg,
not very well today. thanks for the topic.

Do you support marriage for heterosexual couples? Yes
Do you support marriage for same sex couples? Yes

Do you believe that supporting same sex marriage is instrumental in supporting GLBT rights? the right to be equal means the right to marry

Do you think marriage is linked to religion? Doesn't have to be, my sister had a beautiful non-religious wedding recently. The love between two people has nothing to do with "God"
Do you think marriage should be linked to religion? No way

Do you think marriage is linked to governmental recognition? Yes

Just curious, do you think you will get much in the way of different responses on this particular forum?
Oh and on a sort of related note. I was just at wotif.com looking at a hotel in Brisbane and I was shocked to see one hotel saying it was 'Gay Friendly' in the property details.

Is that normal? It seems kinda bizarre that a hotel should even give a shit about sexual preference.

some smaller towns would have a problem with it, but i would find it hard to believe that the big ones would say that. when i was homeless and had to stay at motels, its amazing what you learn. the smaller family run motels are the ones who say no to some people based on their beliefs. the corporate motels really dont care as long as they get paid. they will have drug addicts trash rooms, they have insurance. but were happy to throw me out on the street because i was paying myself rather than the department of housing. gays in smaller towns have no where to go, so the motels advertise that they are gay friendly so they know they can go there, without the embarassment of having to ask and being turned away. some have turned up and then when seeing two men together have been told the place is full.
anyway others may have different stories

I guess I ask the question because I don’t “get” marriage.

For me it has so much religious and patriarchal trappings that I wonder why it still plays such a big part in otherwise liberal heterosexual lives.

And why it has become the equality beacon for same sex relationships.

I understand the recognition of a relationship in society... that I understand. We have actually gone a long way in relation to the ATO and other organisations now using interdependency of a relationship as the method to determine tax breaks. I just was curious what others felt like putting down and thought it was a good jumping off point for some discussion.
