Re:To christen or not to christen - help! - 2008/08/18 10:59
Gemmas post has had the biggest impact on my wife of all of them so far. Well done

Its funny how we force this particular thing on our children isnt it. Mind you there is a much worse example of this going on all over the country to young boys - fathers turning their football teams into some weird multi-generational cult. I had a Melbourne Football Club jumper on me before i could speak let alone kick a football. And given sport is bigger than religion in this country i think we need to do something about it. Perhaps a rally or a website? Even better we need to educate them in the schools. We need moles!

Hi SOI, did you end up working out a solution? I must say that when I had the namegiving ceremony I was about 12 years old or so, my parents asked, and I said yeah, why not - it didn't worry me one way or the other really.

Oh and regarding sports, when my son was born, my brother gave him a few South Sydney things (guernsy, jumper, scarf, etc) because he said there weren't enough Souths supporters (from memory, Souths weren't even in the competition again at that stage too), and tried to get him to go for them, but last year, my niece brainwashed him into going for the Bulldogs I used to go for Penrith (until Super League came along, that just ruined Rugby League for me and I haven't really watched a game since, before then I watched every game each weekend!) but I never tried to get my son to go for them - he also goes for the Western Bulldogs in AFL, although my parents have tried to get him to go for Geelong (mum) or Richmond (dad) lol - I don't follow aussie rules myself (which is strange considering my parents have followed it far more than Rugby League - then again, there are a lot of things my parents like that I don't, like country music, they and most of my family like it, I can't stand it - so that's another thing to think about too, kids can rebel against their parents and belifs, or just simply develop their own tastes so you may find one day that if you do christen your child he/she will rebel against that or in reverse, if you do not you may find you end up with a teenager who's really into church and all that stuff).

Hi. Hope i'm not too late.

I regard 'christening' as one of the most disgusting rituals of the catholic church. The notion is that when a child is born, they are born with 'original sin'. (adam and eve and an apple and a snake etc). So the Baptismal ritual is to cleanse the newborn of this sin.

To believe in a faith that says a newborn person is already tainted, well then you've made a rod for your own back.

cheers

To nomes and jimmy.

Firstly nomes, i would love to know specifically what country music your parents listen to. I reckon i could apply my own concept of original sin here and say that we are brought up to think this music is shit, when in fact there is nothing quite like it if you ignore that 80's and 90's from the mix. Perhaps another thread to continue this issue. I am a musical priest and i think i could convert you to country! It was the first punk music.

Jimmy, no you are not too late. I promise i will do a big post on my blog and will be quoting the guys in here im sure. I want to wait until we are a bit more clear on the particulars otherwise you wont get resolution when you read it, and that would be far too Sopranos for my liking.

I think the issue of rebelling is a very apt one here. Most teenagers with a bit of spunk (the old terminology) will find something to oppose. It seems a pretty standard manifestation of leaving the nest. I guess as a parent what you need to consider is what are the things that you feel are important for your child to learn and then make sure you do not force that opinion down their throat. This leaves them to rebel against something less important like clothes, hair and music (actually in my case its music i have to be careful not to force on her).

On the subject of baptism. I used to be fairly involved in a religion called Sahaja Yoga. It was their belief that the Kundalini is your spirit lying dormant in your sacrum bone. The process of wakening your Kudalini and connecting you to the collective unconscious and God is what they believe is the true baptism. In fact during this process most people (including myself) actually felt it rise up my spine and i could also feel a cool breeze coming out of the fontanelle bone at the top of my head. I am still trying to come to terms with this. Im sure most of us have seen videos of how simple it is to use rapid hypnosis. I need to resolve if this is indeed what happened to me. From that point on i was able to feel this breeze.

This makes you realise just how much influence we can have over other people. I want to be constantly vigilant that i do not enforce beliefs and experiences on my daughter. To christen or baptise her would be to make an imprint that she may hold for many years to come. Especially if she believes that she was a bad soul only made good by the church.

My thanks again for your input.

Anyone seen this article- http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,24216087-1246,00.html

Given what we have been discussing it adds a little weight to my wish not to christen her. In fact i was so annoyed by the comments on that site that i had to post a blog on it. I would welcome your comments. Was i being too harsh?

Is your wife more after a romanticized ceremony that will be taken seriously... more a day of attention than heaven.

I'm a skeptic I know.
